1. Police Explorers
The Sandy Springs Police Explorer Post 059 was formed in December, 2010. The program is under the guidelines of the Boy Scouts of America. The police explorer program is an opportunity for young adults between the ages of 14 and 20 years of age to become exposed to the basics of law enforcement. The Police Explorers Unit is a Division of the Boy Scouts of America.
Explorers will participate in numerous and community events such as parades, carnivals, child fingerprinting and photo Id's.
Explorers not only learn about Law Enforcement, but are also taught discipline, team work and leadership skills that will be an asset to them throughout their lives regardless of their choice of profession. 2. Police Reserve Program
The SSPD Reserve Program is comprised of P.O.S.T. certified reserve officers who donate time to the department. Reserves are an essential element of police operations. Reserve-unit members serve city warrants as well as assist in police operations such as traffic safety checks, selective patrol, assisting regular SSPD units, training, and many other functions in the operations division. The SSPD Reserve Unit is under the SSPD Community Affairs Unit.

3. Citizens on Patrol
The Sandy Springs Volunteer Unit consist of civilians volunteering time to assist in a number of SSPD projects and tasks. The unit members are graduates of the Sandy Springs Police Citizen's Police Academy. Unit members assist in several crime-prevention presentations as well as department operations including serving as staff for the citizen's police academy. Volunteer members will begin operating the Citizen's Patrol detail. The detail will consist of volunteers patrolling Sandy Springs, serving as eyes and ears for patrol officers. The specially marked patrol vehicle will be equipped with radio capabilities for citizen-to-officer communications on the beat. Volunteer members of the patrol unit will undergo several weeks of specialized patrol training. Duties will include standby duties to free up patrol officers and handicap parking enforcement duties.
