Target Grant Renewed

Funds target Citizens on Patrol Unit

Release Date: 7/19/2011

The Target Company has awarded SSPD $1,000 for the department's new Citizens on Patrol Unit as part of their national Public Safety Grant Program.

For nearly two decades, Target has supported local law enforcement agencies across the country by sharing ideas and resources through Target & BLUE™, which is part of Target’s commitment to innovative philanthropy and is rooted in their philosophy that public/private partnerships create safer communities.

In the past, SSPD has utilized the Target Grant to assist in focusing on gang prevention. This year's grant will help fund the new C.O.P. Unit, comprised of civilian volunteers patrolling the business and residential areas of Sandy Springs providing "eyes and ears" for the department. The unit members, fifteen strong, have completed several weeks of training coupled with field training with sworn officers. All members of the patrol  unit are graduates of the SSPD citizens police academy. In addition to patrolling, members will assist in traffic safety checks and standby duty at accident scenes or road closures, allowing sworn officers to remain in service.
