SSPD Investigating Murder-Suicide
Children Believed Missing Found Safe
Release Date: 7/13/2011
Sandy Springs Police are investigating the apparent murder / suicide that took place at 789 Hammond Drive in the Park Towers Condominiums sometime between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on July 12.
Officers were called to the scene last night around 10 p.m. to check the welfare of the victim Irene Mickens, at the request of her father. She had gone to visit Jamal Mickens, her estranged husband and who was living at Park Towers and who had the couple's two children, ages 7 and 5. Officers reported that no one answered the door. They returned an hour later but no response was given from inside the condominium. Later, officers found her car in the Park Towers parking lot. Early this morning, detectives obtained a search warrant and entry into the condo was made at about 10 a.m.
Inside the condominium officers found the bodies of Jamal and Irene Mickens. A search of the condo and subsequent search of the area did not reveal the kids. A large-scale search was initiated involving Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Johns Creek, Roswell, and Alpharetta Police Departments began just before 11 a.m. The search ended just before noon when the children were confirmed well and at the residence of Jamal Mickens's sister in McDonough, GA. It appears that Jamal Mickens took the two children to his sister's house and then returned to his home at Park Towers. It is believed that about 6 p.m. he called Irene Mickens and asked her to come over. Shortly after she arrived, he apparently shot her before taking his own life. A semi-auto pistol was found at the scene.
