Man Arrested on I-285
Officer Bitten During Struggle

Sandy Springs Police received several calls of a man darting in and out of traffic on I-285 near Peachtree Dunwoody Road this afternoon at about 4:30 p.m. Responding officer were advised that Dunwoody Police had also received calls on the same subject. The location of the incident is on the border of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. The calls referenced a man who appeared to be carrying a large stick, wearing no shoes and wore long dreadlocks, and who was darting in and out of interstate traffic.
Officers located a man matching the description and upon contact, the man ran into the interstate, crossing all eastbound lanes, and jumped the median before coming to a stop in the westbound lanes of I-285 where officers confronted him. The suspect, 22-year old Andre Thelwell, was taken into custody after a brief struggle. During that time, one Sandy Springs officer was bitten by the suspect. The officer was treated and released from the hospital. Thelwell was taken into custody and is being charged by Dunwoody Police. Charges include Aggravated Assault, Obstruction, and pedestrian violation charges. The incident occurred just inside the Dunwoody City Limits.
