Cases are assigned each day based upon solvability factors. All criminal cases do not get assigned to a detective. Some examples of solvability factors that are used in the determination of whether or not to assign a case are suspect descriptions, known suspect information, vehicle descriptions, available witnesses, or some other type of physical evidence. In 2010, over 3,700 cases were assigned to Sandy Springs detectives. The overall clearance rate for C.I.U. for 2009 was 29% and in 2010 was 32%.
